Welcome to my fine art page. A lot of the things here I've done in various art classes and would probably be considered to be more classical art. The art here is both work I've done in high school and in college. Its roughly in chronological order, but I couldn't remember for some works- newest works are toward the bottom in each category. I've tried to divide everything into genre or medium categories as I see fit for easier browsing. Newest works are marked with a *.
I do art because I enjoy doing it though, and I think a lot of my pieces reflect that I just like to have fun with it. I would hope that most of my works would make you smile and possibly think. In high school I did more experimenting with color while in college I did more monochrome or drab works. I've always been interested in the human figure though (my nude drawings are separated and noted.) At first I did a lot of intense value study type drawings, but I've since become much more interested in the grace and simplicity of lines in the right places.

Figure Drawings
girl portrait - oil pastel. A really rough color sketch. I liked the reduction of the figure into simplified colors.
girl profile - colored pencil. Just having some fun with many colors.
girl w/ glasses sitting sketch - pencil. A basic drawing of a friend.
face and hand - pencil. A study of my friend's face and hand as she was sleeping.
girl upper body sketch - pencil. A rough outline of another friend of mine.
girl sitting w/ drawing board - crayon. I was having fun with patches of color.
my hand - pencil. I actually kinda had nails then. Just a study of my hand.
girl with harp - pencil. My friend as she was practicing on the harp.
man in bed with covers - ink and bamboo brush. A friend of mine sleeping, the only way he would hold still ^_^. I was experimenting with the bamboo brush, I really like it.
boy portrait - cray pas on grey paper. From a fig drawing class. He looks like a Greek.
boy in chair with stick - lithograph. My first really successful lithograph. Based on a drawing from fig drawing class.

unidentified woman- pencil. This is a drawing based on a photo of a deceased unidentified victim. Kind of a test to see if I wanted to get into that kind of work, but I don't think its quite good enough of a likeness.
NUDES
woman standing by chair - pencil. From some of the first drawings I did from nudes.
woman leaning - pen. This is a pen outline style I developed. I'm still more comfortable working with pencil however.
man cross-legged - conte crayon on grey paper. One of my first drawings on grey paper.
older woman sitting - conte crayon on grey paper. I think this drawing was really effective on the grey paper. All the wrinkles and stuff are actually quite fun to draw, its a refreshing change from the younger models.
man sitting - crayon. This is a large drawing I scanned in several pieces and then put back together. Proof you can use most anything to make a nice drawing ^_^.
woman sitting from behind - pencil. A very gentle value study (for me.) Was scanned in several parts.
woman looking to side sketch - charcoal. The hands didn't turn out right but I liked the shape of the rest of the body.
back of figure holding ball - pencil. I was working at a consistant line style to roughly define the figure's mass.
woman sketches - pencil. A couple quick sketches of a woman modeling.
woman laying foreshortened - pencil. This drawing I felt good about because it is a pretty accurate replication of the actual pose.
woman laying on the side - pencil. This drawing ended up out of proportion in the middle, especially the arm, but there were still some nice parts to it.
woman standing with bamboo stick - pencil. One of my favorite drawings- I felt like I captured the figure very simply but accurately.

Installations
umbrellas in the stairwell- umbrellas, string. This was a final class project I really enjoyed. There is this one stairwell in the art building that's kinda old and creepy, and has this long shaft that goes down the middle. I don't know why I thought this, but I wanted to have something hanging there (I really like hanging things with string.) For some reason umbrellas seemed quite sensable. Yes, umbrellas hanging indoors. So I basically rigged up a pulley-system grid of string along the top of the stairwell and tied up each open umbrella, lowering it down to the height I wanted and then tying it off. Some of the umbrellas were mine, and a lot of the others I borrowed from friends. I left it up for a couple weeks, I kind of wish I could have gotten more feedback on it though. The pictures are arranged roughly going from the top floor down. There were 5 floors I think. Some of the pictures are a little dark because I didn't use the flash for all of them because the digital camera battery was running low. Its a little confusing because some are looking down and some up, but you'll get the general idea.

boats and water and farewell- origami paper. This project was somewhat the result of a more ambitious project pretty much falling flat. We were supposed to do something on-location at Birdsong (in GA), a really neat nature preserve. I wandered around a while and I found this really neat little creek. I was feeling kind of low around that time since I was going to be moving away at the end of the semester. I ended up deciding what you know and simple is good. I always loved origami so I decided to float origami boats on the creek. I carefully made some and painted some gel medium on the bottom to make them more waterproof. I also taught the class to make them so everyone also had their little boat to put in. I love all the colors and patterns on the origami paper ^_^. It was about letting go and still being able to have fun.

artificial colors and flavors- glass bowl, fake white roses, jell-o (various flavors.) This was for a class project at Bahn Thai, a Thai resteraunt. We each did a piece and then the customers got to pick from a menu what art piece they wanted brought to their table. I wanted to have fun with color and food for this one. I got a glass jar and arranged some flowers in it. Then I mixed up 8 packs of jell-o. I'd pour each in and then chill it till it hardened before putting in the next out- it took quite a while. It turned out really pretty, especially with light shining through it. Kind of an odd table centerpiece ^_^. This was my first experience working with a food product.  I decided to work with Jell-o because its really such strange stuff and it comes in such wonderful translucent colors.

Miscellany
owl flying - pencil. This is an old old drawing I did from a picture I saw in an anatomy textbook or something while I was in class.
room in the dark - pencil. Just playing with space and shading.
sweater - pencil and colored pencil. One of my old sweaters.
random small pictures - pencil. Just a couple little drawings from various places- stairs on a lake, shoes, sandals, and gloves.
tree out back - charcoal. I don't like charcoal that much, but I tried to get it to work here.
ladybug and grasshopper along the river - pen. This is one of my fairytale type images that I've done. I messed up with making the water too high though.
death collage - magazine cut-outs. For a little while I was into making collages from magazine pictures and words, since there were a lot of them on hand.
bunnies in the night- marker. This is an attempt at the beginnings of a childrens book I started in high school and never got finished. I was trying for a very simple black and white illustration that was very unique for me. Most of the pages here are finished but a couple were still in the works. The rest remained in light sketch form only. The story was essentially a low-text narrative starting out showing all the animals asleep, and then the bunnies waking up and creeping up on a house. They'd go through the garden and climb into the kitchen to steal the cookies, and then slip out and have fun. Then they'd be sleeping during the day.

reflections of the past- woodblock print. This was my first printmaking experience. Actually this isn't even one of the best prints that came off, its just the one that my mom happened to have up ^_^; I actually got an award for this though.
judith detail - pencil. This is a drawing from a woman in the painting Judith with the Head of Holfernes that I never finished. I was just interested in the cloth and extreme shadows. Only the left half is finished.
butterfly 1 - pencil. From a dead butterfly I found on the sidewalk and took home.
butterfly 2 - pen. This is the last butterfly drawing I got to do before the cat ate it.
moth to candle - colored pencil. Just a little exploration in motion and how to handle a candle flame.

balance senior show guestbook- assemblage of mixed media. This is the guest book I made for my senior show in high school. Its mostly bits of things I found around and felt like using. For the inside of the covers I cut up some of the invitations (which I actually had drawn too) and glued them in. For the pages I had alternating paper- white, grey, and vanilla colored which I found in the art room. It was kind of difficult to scan since its not completely flat.

geisha - pen. This is an image based on a Japanese woodblock print I saw in a book and liked a lot. I really admire their graceful use of line and pattern.

installations book- collage. boats and water and farewell page. artificial colors and flavors page. For the end of my installation class we were required to make a page of each project for a book documenting the whole class. Of course my nice original design I did on the computer didn't work on the Macs in the lab, so I threw these two pages together in the lab at the last minute from printed photos.

Paintings
bananas - acrylic. This is one of my better paintings. A clump of bananas on the table.
raggedy ann doll - acrylic. I used a little more water with this one that usual.

tall self portrait on door- acrylic. Late one night I just felt like doing a life-size self portrait. So I taped a bunch of paper together up to the wall (since I didn't have a sheet big enough) and started painting.
dryads in the wood - pen, watercolor. A fairytale type image. I was trying to make it look like they were emerging from the trees, but I'm not terribly good at watercolor. The paint looks unfinished, but it started to help.
fox spirit - pen, watercolor. A fox woman with a semi-human face almost like a mask.
the annunciation - oil paint. A assignment to copy a master painting. I'm a really slow painter so I never finished it, only the right half is really mostly done.

Self Portraits
portrait with long wet hair - pencil. One of my earlier self portraits, a basic pencil drawing. The features seem to be off though.
linear portrait with hair pulled back - pencil and pen. This is my pen style at the time. I find glasses to be rather difficult.
simply bleah - pencil. We had to do a self portrait in class that day and this is how I felt about it. Actually one of my favorites. Drawing your face over and over gets boring!
drowned rat - pen. It rained really hard one day and of course I had to go between buildings for class without an umbrella. So this is my representation of what I looked like. I was actually wearing that dress and standing dripping on the floor about like that, with my shoes in my hand.
in the bathroom - photograph. I love that hat. I know you're not supposed to show a camera in a photo but I said screw it. I also like it because its really unbalanced, it makes it kind of odd. There I am, the freak with the camera- that about sums up my photo class.
thoughtful with brush - oil painting. I never liked this painting much. I wanted to do a fun loose one but I can't seem to do that with oils. The more I worked on it the muddier it got. I still don't think it looks done.

Photography
girls in dance room - b&w. An old high school picture of a couple of my friends. I really liked all the mirrors in that room.
dirty dishes - b&w. Part of a documenting a process (making cookies) assignment.
signs - b&w. I just thought the angle on this one was really neat, with all the lines going in different directions.
pipes in alleyway - b&w. I liked how the alley went back and the pipes crossed it. I think someone in my class also took a similar photo. I was really into lines and geometric shapes formed in space at the time.
zigzag pipes - b&w. I really got into these pipes that were by this building and the weird valves on them. I liked how they snaked around all over the place.
pipes from wall -b&w. More pipes and geometric shapes.
parking meter - b&w. Close-up at an angle meant to emphasize its shape.
broken ceramic pieces in stones - b&w. This is a photo mostly about texture. I love the texture in black and white photos! Composition isn't very good though now that I look back on it.
corner of building - b&w. I just really liked this composition, but that roll of film turned out funny so I could never get the picture to turn out evenly.
double door handles - b&w. I liked the angle of this picture. I guess I also like extreme angles on normal things.
street pavement - b&w. I just liked the pattern in the pavement, like a piece of abstract art.
danger on the stairs - b&w. Just something about the wooden stairs and all the rubbish around this oddly placed 'danger' sign.
light by tree - b&w. I actually don't like this one much. I don't know what I was thinking when I took it- it just didn't end up working out compositionally as I had wanted.
leaves and tree roots - b&w. A fun textures photo.
thick leaves and twigs - b&w. Another fun textures photo.

Sculpture
self portrait in a box - mixed media. This was for a class show in high school. I made the wooden structure without even knowing what I was going to put in it (I like cupboard-like boxes), and just started filling in the compartments. It did end up being about me in a way. I incorperated all the styles that I enjoyed at the time. Below are some close-up shots of parts of it, sorry a couple of them turned out a little blurry.
detail 1- feather hands and birds   detail 2- painted face   detail 3- eye   detail 4- photo collage   detail 5- feet dancing

bird mask 1 2 - clay. Part of an assignment to make three masks. This one started out as kind of a "green man" design and just got more and more abstract. The colors were nice until I glazed it and then they got muted.

giraffe mask 1 2 3 - clay. My second mask and my favorite. I think this one turned out quite well although again when I glazed it the colors changed. Darn it whey does my stuff get messed up when I do a clear glaze over? I don't like it when its really flat tho from the underglaze.
me as nausicaa bust - clay. We had an assignment to portray ourselves as a leader, so I chose Nausicaa from Nausciaa of the Valley of Wind. This is my first attempt at an anime-style sculpture. Some of the hair broke off, but other than that it survived firing pretty well.

triple lip platter- clay. This is one of the few things I was actually able to keep and proud of from my wheel throwing class. It was rather difficult, but I wanted to try to do unusual shapes, so I threw this from one piece of clay. Not even sure how I pulled it off, but I started with the middle and then did each lip out. Unfortunately that firing screwed up and it was overfired, so the clay got funny looking and it'll never take a glaze.
leaf mobile 1 2 3 - leaves, twigs, string, wire. I have always liked making mobiles out of  various things, I guess I like carefully balancing them and watching them move. Some people say that must be hard to put together but it just comes naturally and intuitively. I sometimes cover the leaves in gel medium so they last longer. This mobile no longer exists, as it was knocked down and trampled upon by the other classes that used the room.
big foot 1 2 - clay. Modeled on my foot. I had problems with  it sinking down as I was making it, and the toes were a pain. The thing just seemed to keep getting bigger and bigger as I was making it ^_^;. The glaze turned out kinda neat but too thick.
NUDES
woman bust 1 2- oil clay. This was my first serious lengthy oil clay figure study. I think it turned out well (this picture is not yet up.)
woman standing - oil clay. This one came quickly and smoothly. This one was one of my first quicker sculptures.
man laying 1 2 - oil clay. This one looked better before it was done somehow. It just looks somewhat odd but it was pretty accurate.
face 1 2 - oil clay. I did this one because I had been mostly focusing on the body and not the face or head.
woman sitting - oil clay. I didn't include the hands because I ran out of time. I actually think the neck is one of the nicer parts. The folds in the stomach are kind of hard to do so they look convincing.
woman laying 1 2 - oil clay. This is a small and simple one that turned out well.
woman curled 1 2 3 - oil clay. This one is okay but it feels like I didn't made her midsection long enough. I ran out of time so it isn't really finished.
woman laying and curled together - oil clay. This is just a nice shot outdoors of the two above sculptures together- you can see the shadows better.

Still Life
bathtub knobs - pencil. One of my first drawings in high school as an assignment. I like drawing the reflections on metal.
lamp and picture - pencil. This was at my friend's house one evening. I had a tendency to make my drawings a little too light at the time.
animal skulls - pencil and pen. I like the neat organic shapes in skulls, especially animal ones.
wooden dinosaur skeleton - pencil. This was just an attempt at drawing it as accurately as possible from that angle, since the form was pretty complecated and flat.
skeleton in blue - oil pastel. I put down a thick layer of oil pastel and then used a pen nib to scratch into it.
statue- pencil and oil paster. A study of a statue of a female torso. I scratched another drawing of it into the black background but its really hard to see because when I used fixative on it the black bled into the lines I scratched in.
metal squirrel in cloth - pencil. An old silver squirrel-shaped bank with cloth over it. Metal is another thing I enjoy drawing, as well as glass.
pumpkin-man and cloth 1 2 3 - pencil. This is a sequence study of sorts. I had this silly little figure from Halloween and I slowly arranged the cloth to be covering him. I enjoy drawing cloth so it was a fun assigment.
umbrella- pencil. A drawing of an umbrella for an assignment.
flower outline - pen and ink wash. I did the outline of the flower and then did an ink wash around it to help it stand out.
flowers- pencil. Another picture of the flowers. They were starting to wilt a bit at that point.
